With the Presence of President Barzani, the New US Consulate in Erbil Was Opened
Today, Wednesday, December 3, 2025, in the presence of President Barzani, Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, and Michael Regas, US Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, the new US Consulate in Erbil was opened in a ceremony, which is considered the largest consulate of that country globally. The cornerstone of the consulate building was laid on July 6, 2018, with a cost of over $795 million.
The consulate complex is not just an administrative building; it is designed as a small town, including the main office, staff residences, accommodation for security teams and visitors, shops, and parking lots. A vast area has also been allocated for greenery. Technically and environmentally, the building was constructed in a modern and eco-friendly manner. It features an advanced water recycling system, and 15% of its electricity needs are met through solar energy, aiming to reduce environmental impacts.
This new building has the capacity to accommodate 1000 people, and the opening of the largest US consulate in Erbil is interpreted as a sign of the US administration's commitment to its relations with the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
