Erbil and West Azerbaijan (Urmia) Governors Emphasize Developing Relations

On Tuesday afternoon, May 20, 2025, Omed Khoshnaw, Governor of Erbil, met with Reza Rahmani, Governor of West Azerbaijan , on the sidelines of the third joint meeting of the governors of the border provinces of the Kurdistan Region and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
 

During the meeting, which was attended by Shaker Hussein, Head of Region-Iran Relations, and Masoud Bateli, Head of the Haji Omran International Border Crossing, both sides reaffirmed the advancement, improvement, and strengthening of trade and economic movement between the two provinces. They also expressed their satisfaction with the full implementation of the points of the agreement between the two provinces and the progress that has been made.

Also, appreciation was shown to the teams from both sides and all those who were instrumental in signing the agreement and remained committed to its implementation.
Regarding this matter, the Governor of Erbil stated his happiness that due to their agreement, apart from boosting commercial, economic, and tourism activity at the Haji Omran - Tamarchin border crossing, their relations with other cities of the Islamic Republic of Iran have also broadened.
 

In another part of the meeting, regarding this year's preparations for the arrival of Iranian pilgrims via the Haji Omran - Tamarchin border crossing, their stay in Erbil, the capital of the Region, and their visit to the holy sites in Iraq, both sides instructed their teams to make the utmost preparation for serving them this year.
 

In another part of the meeting, the Governor of Erbil raised the issue of opening the "Sidekan, Kilashin" border crossing and stressed that the Kurdistan Regional Government has made all preparations and is ready for its opening. Subsequently, the opening of an airline route between Urmia and Erbil was discussed. Regarding this matter, the Governor of Erbil confirmed that the Kurdistan Region had no reservations, and both parties agreed to start formulating a joint mechanism for this purpose.
